build the city around yourself

research by design - already achieved

Following the principle of 'practice your theory and theorize your practice' originating from the AVATAR Master in Architectural Design Programme at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London - the issue touched upon here has already been explored earlier. For the MArch thesis, a digital film has been created that works around the same notion. As in the original version of "street view", a dodecahedron (platonic solid out of twelve pentagons) was chosen to create an abstraction of a sphere. The dodecahedron's shape was then unfolded and textured with a collage out of different utopian, non-existing landscapes. These collages were then brought into an animation software and folded back together into a dodecahedron in virtual 3d space. A virtual camera was then positioned in the middle of that layered, spherical set up; the camera path led the spectator through a linked sequence of interchangeable landscapes. Space was detached from singular, specific geographies.

> watch *.scape digital film

While the digital film depicts a single motion path predefined in space and time, {cityscape.at} allows the users to actively intervene and navigate their own personal set up.
