build the city around yourself

beyond determining space as purely functional

{cityscape.at} makes inventive use of an existing structural concept and re-appropriates the topology into user-generated content and experience. Google’s "Street view" has been conceived of as something that follows the classic traits of modern urbanism; spaces have been clearly determined after their use (residential, office, etc.), there is little room for interaction. Changes or adaptations through individuals are not taken into account - space is used only for what it has already been designed. While the former application treats the user as a passive user and limits the scope of the site to purely functional needs, {cityscape.at} understands the perception of the (virtual) urban landscape "as something that is performed or practiced.
[..] The issue of the late-capitalistic city is not simply to do with the material, the functional and the acqusitional; [..] contemporary urbanisms should also be concerned with the experiential and qualitative expectations of the populace. Urban citizens are not simply passive consumers, but are constantly engaged with the city, appropriating and re-appropriating the sites and systems for their own ends."
Nic Clear & Iain Borden; Urbanisms, in: Bartlett Designs, Speculating with Architecture; 2009; John Wiley&Sons Ltd.

{cityscape.at} wants to address problematic issues in contemporary urban landscapes: It is mono-functional spaces that lead to the vast undesirable cityscapes we know. This website project wants to recall that the architects' task is not only to design spaces but foremost to develop and choreograph strategies how these spaces will be used. Also, it wants to encourage a critical habit of thought in society: citizens are to challenge an overly deterministic use of space.
