build the city around yourself

excursus

The web page offers the framework for users to immerse themselves in urban landscapes. A real time drawing of urban scenarios for user generated experience within the public realm of the world wide web, {cityscape.at} enables each one to develop their personal experience of topography between a real now-here and utopia's no-where.

Actual places, specific locations, geography have lost much of their sovereignty. They exist as copies, and as copies of copies. Urban landscapes have become interchangeable. Space is neither defined nor restricted by its local horizons. The so called ‘globalized world’ consists of generic, interchangeable spaces, where distances are measured in time. Current discourse treats space as an entity detached from geography, triggering the question has geography lost?

Space's inherent attributes exceed what a local geography describes. French philosopher Jean Beaudrillard characterized our surrounding space insofar as it consists only of copies of copies, known as simulacra, while originals have disappeared. Theoretician Frederic Jameson describes our age as postmodern "hyperspace", where it has become impossible to locate an individual in one specific place. We do act as mobile carriers of references and coordinates, interacting in both virtual and physical landscapes. Individuals' positions within a bigger picture are multiple and in constant flux, to be renegotiated over and over. Through simultaneously navigating many places surrounding space, be it virtual or physical, becomes an interchangeable entity varied by the point of focus.

These aspects offer plenty of room for further exploration, {cityscape.at} takes this as point of departure.
